‘General Hospital’ Steve Burton: Toxic Texts Exposed Amid Custody Battle

General Hospital star Steve Burton, who plays Jason Morgan on the hit daytime drama, is taking his ex-wife back to court. After being married for 23 years, Steve and Sheree (Gustin) Burton finalized their divorce in 2023. The couple shares adult children Makena and Jack, along with Brooklyn, who is 11. The divorce came after Sheree announced in May 2022 that she was pregnant with a child, but it was not Steve’s kid. The divorce agreement gave the two parents joint custody of their kids. However, Steve is now asking the courts to intervene and enforce the custody agreement after claiming that Sheree is not being cooperative about their agreement. Amid the new custody battle, texts shared between the two former spouses were exposed. What did they say? Keep reading for all the alleged details. 

General Hospital: Steve Burton, Sheree Burton Back In Court

General Hospital star Steve Burton is fighting his ex-wife Sheree regarding their joint legal and physical custody agreement of their children. According to TMZ, Burton seeks legal help in making Sheree comply with the custody agreement decided and finalized in 2023. He alleged in court filings that Sheree is “engaged in a pattern of unilateral decision making and deliberate obstruction that has effectively stripped Steve of his court-ordered parenting time.”

Burton alleges that Sheree enrolled their daughter in a six-week program in California, which cuts into his court-ordered time with her. He believes she has put their daughter in the middle of their conflicts with one another. 

Steve asked the courts to make his ex comply with the court-ordered visitation and also make her pay $5k for her behavior.

Toxic Texts Exposed

On Wednesday, TMZ revealed toxic texts released to the courts by Burton amid their ongoing custody battle. He told Sheree in a text message that it was manipulation. He went on to say, “I know your priority is not having her spend time with us. Activities do not Trump time with family. Again this is something you signed and you decided to neglect that and now put it on [Brooklyn] .. and now you get to say dad won’t let you…when you should have said it’s not gonna work.”

Sheree responded to Burton, noting that he knew their daughter had made the request to participate in the camp. She also said that it was his decision to move to Tennessee. Sheree went on to say that Brooklyn’s involvement in more activities would continue. She said it’s not fair to their daughter to change her life to accommodate his move. She concluded, saying, “Please just enjoy your weekend with your daughter. I’m done talking about this.”

In a future text, Steve said, “The truth is, you’ve never been willing to work with anything. If you were, we never would’ve gone to court in the first place just to see my daughter.”

In previous court documents, Burton’s legal team made Sheree aware that the toll from living in California was affecting Steve’s health, and so he was moving to Tennessee. 

So far, the case remains ongoing, and no official judgment has been issued. Burton is currently on a hiatus from General Hospital and will return to the studio to resume filming in June.
