Will ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Return For Season 23?

Grey’s Anatomy continues to be one of the longest and most-streamed TV shows today. The ABC drama has been on air for many years, with Season 22 currently airing. The show has currently been on a winter break hiatus. Fans are anxious for the show to return since everyone was left with unknown answers in the last episode. Many thought it would be returning sooner than it is and are somewhat frustrated over the extended break. As everyone anticipates the conclusion of Season 22, some fans are already looking toward the future and wondering if Season 23 is happening or if the show could be ending after all these years. Here’s what is known so far about the future of Grey’s Anatomy. 

Will Season 22 End Grey’s Anatomy?

Grey’s Anatomy has been on the air for 22 seasons and continues to pull in a large audience. It has been a part of the Thursday night lineup for many years. The beloved medical drama takes place at Grey Sloan Memorial, which was formerly Seattle Grace and Seattle Grace Mercy West. Fans have watched as Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, started out as a student and has worked her way up to chief. The show continues to focus on surgeons, residents, and interns.

There have been a lot of characters that have come and gone over the years. However, three have stuck it out and been in it for the long haul. They are Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, and James Pickens Jr. as Richard Webber. Of course, there are also many more who have been on screen for several seasons, and some who return with guest appearances.

As far as whether or not Season 22 could be the grand finale, TV Insider has the scoop. As of this writing, Grey’s Anatomy has not been renewed for Season 23. However, those announcements typically do not come until later in the spring. According to the news outlet, ratings have slightly dropped since Season 21 (averaging a .19 rating in the key demographic, down from .22). However, it has also slightly increased in viewership (averaging 2.213 million viewers per episode, up from 2.2 million). Plus, the show remains one of the most-streamed series in all of television, with 40.9 billion minutes watched in 2025 across all platforms.

It is most likely that ABC will renew the long-running show for Season 23. If they do, new episodes typically release in September or October.

Fans Notice Possible Discrepancy In Recent Episode

In one of Grey’s Anatomy’s recent episodes, Kate Walsh returned as Addison. Die-hard fans know their characters and remember little details. One detail came to light when Addison was with Amelia, eating a plate of cookies. While Amelia sipped on milk, Addison opted for wine. This had fans questioning if the writers knew what they were doing. One fan said, “Why did you bring Addison back in season 18 and have her tell us she was struggling with alcohol, only to show her casually drinking WINE in season 22?”

Some pointed out that Addison never claimed to be an alcoholic, nor did she claim to be sober. Some thought it was odd that she would be drinking in front of Amelia, who is sober, and Addison helped her get there.
