Maurice Benard Breaks Silence About Sonny’s New ‘GH’ Love

General Hospital fans have seen it coming for quite some time now. It was only a matter of time before Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Justine Turner (Nazneen Contractor) found themselves locking lips. Sonny kissed her, and she stopped it and proceeded to slap him. But her attraction to him has been somewhat obvious for months. Certain things he has done have shocked her and probably even impressed her somewhat. Now that their first kiss happened, Benard is dishing on what he thinks about the new love interest writers have cooked up for him. Does he think Sonny and Justine are a good fit? 

General Hospital Mobster Maurice Benard Speaks On Sonny’s Love Interest

Soap Opera Digest caught up with General Hospital fan favorite Maurice Benard to chat about his latest love interest on the soap. Fans saw Sonny and ADA Turner kiss on Monday. It didn’t end well, and she slapped him, but how long can she really resist the handsome mob boss? Their feelings for one another have been slowly progressing over the past several months. Now that he made a move, what will happen next between these two, and how does Benard feel about it?

Sonny has been living the good life these days. He’s happy, and Benard said, “I’m into everything at this point. I’m into ADA Turner. It’s been really cool. She’s a really good actress, and it works on every level for me.”

Maurice knew from the moment they started working together that they could potentially be a good match on screen. They have proven to have chemistry, and he’s impressed with her acting ability. He said, “For me, the bottom line is, ‘Can this person get in there and do what needs to be done?’ And she has proven that she can. And to me, it’s working. When I’m in a scene with her, I’m not questioning [her abilities]. She’s the perfect height. Not that that matters all that much, but she is! All in all, it just feels right.”

Where Is It Going?

Of course, nobody knows what General Hospital writers have planned for Sonny and Justine. However, Benard feels that Sonny deserves to be happy and not be alone forever. He noted that sometimes fans are like a mother figure and get protective of Sonny. As for Maurice, though, he thinks there is great chemistry between himself and Contractor. 

This wouldn’t be the first time writers have paired Sonny with someone on the good side of the law. But as Benard pointed out, what soap opera hasn’t done a certain storyline ten times already? He believes it’s more about the onscreen chemistry than it is the actual story. 

Maurice revealed that Sonny is attracted to Justine for many reasons, and one being that she seems strong on the outside, but deep inside, there is a vulnerability. He said, “There’s a lot of potential in that area for both of them — like for him to show her what he’s been through. It’s going to be very interesting.”

Ric (Rick Hearst) warned Sonny on the show that he could be being set up by ADA Turner. However, Sonny doesn’t believe that. Benard says he knows Justine has an attraction to him, and he doesn’t believe she would go after him legally at this point.
