Lindsey Vonn Has Surgery After Second Serious Crash In A Week
United States Olympic Gold Medalist Lindsey Vonn has surgery after having her second serious crash in a week. Last week, Vonn tore her ACL while competing in a downhill race in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. She made the tough decision to push through and compete with her injury. Her practice runs were great on Saturday, although announcers noted how she favored the right leg during certain parts of her downhill descent. During her actual skiing attempt, Vonn clipped a gate with her right shoulder, and it spun her 90 degrees down the slope before ending awkwardly on her back. What injuries did Vonn sustain?
Olympic Competitor Lindsey Vonn Undergoes Surgery After Crash
Lindsey Vonn was airlifted off a mountain for the second time in a week after suffering a horrific crash just 13 seconds into her downhill skiing race at the Winter Olympics in Italy. After landing awkwardly on her back, Vonn screamed out in pain while paramedics rushed to her side. They attended to her for approximately fifteen minutes before a helicopter airlifted her off the mountain. She was transported to a hospital.
It turns out Lindsey broke her left leg, the same leg she sustained the ACL tear in last week. Vonn underwent surgery Sunday afternoon in Italy to stabilize her broken leg. U.S. Ski & Snowboarding officials confirmed that Vonn was stable and being attended to by both American and Italian physicians. The 41-year-old Gold Medalist has a long journey ahead of her, while family and friends are thankful she’s going to be okay.
Just one day prior to her Olympic comeback dreams being crushed, Vonn fired back at an opinion piece by a sports medicine physician. She said, “My life does not revolve around ski racing. I am a woman that loves to ski. I don’t have an identity issue, I know exactly who I am. I was retired for 6 years and I have an amazing life. I don’t need to ski, but I love to ski. I came all this way for one final Olympics and I’m going to go and do my best, ACL or no. It’s as simple as that.”

She Continued To Show Support Following Injury
Lindsey Vonn continued to show support for her fellow Americans skiing in the Olympic race for the Gold Medal. Her teammate, Breezy Johnson, went on to win the Gold Medal for the United States. She shared with reporters that she was told Vonn was cheering her on from the helicopter following her horrific crash. At the time, she noted she hoped the injury Vonn sustained was not as bad as it looked. She wished her the best.
It’s unclear what her future plans will be following this crash.
