‘General Hospital’ James Patrick Stuart Opens Up About Addiction

General Hospital fans may not know that James Patrick Stuart struggled with addiction. Stuart is known for his incredible portrayal of Valentin Cassadine on the daytime drama. On screen, he’s currently navigating a sizzling relationship with Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) and trying to bring down the bad guys. Off-screen, he continues to live life to the fullest with his wife after enduring so much struggle in the past. What did James share about addiction?

General Hospital: James Patrick Stuart On Addiction

Maurice Benard created his podcast, State of Mind, to help people out there struggling. He has been through it himself and is very open about his struggles with mental health. He has many stars on his podcast, most from General Hospital, who talk about their own struggles and how they have overcome them. One of those guests is James Patrick Stuart. His appearance on the podcast was eye-opening. 

He admits that he has struggled with addiction. In the past, when he was roughly 25 or 26, he recalls an eye-opening moment when he realized all the self-help books he had spread out on his brother’s table were not helping him. That moment changed things for him. He started to live and started to think of others instead of always himself. 

James discusses the isolating and secretive nature of addiction. He looked back on a period in his life where he “traded one reality for another.” He also opens up about the heavy toll substance use takes on personal relationships.

Trying To Hide His Addiction

James Patrick Stuart also opened up to Maurice about the awkward moments he would run into friends and colleagues from the show. He said he would be out with people he normally wouldn’t be seen with and definitely wouldn’t want to introduce people to. Those people he was with were, at times, his dealer and their friends and family. Colleagues were confused about how he would even know these people. 

In the end, he was able to overcome it all and is now thriving. He hopes, as does Benard, that speaking about it will help even just one person know they aren’t alone and to keep going. 

As for Valentin, do you hope he and Carly find a way to be together? Right now, fans seem to be loving this new partnership.
