General Hospital veteran Roger Howarth is set to rejoin daytime television. News broke on Thursday that Howarth will be cast in a mystery role on a soap after leaving Port Charles in 2023. The Emmy-winning actor will begin taping in the near future. What is known about Howarth’s new role?

General Hospital Fan Favorite Roger Howarth Rejoining Daytime TV

New broke Thursday on Deadline that it won’t be too long before fans will be seeing Roger Howarth on their televisions again. The longtime soap star is making a comeback to daytime. Roger began playing Paul Ryan from 2001 to 2010, CBS’s As the World Turns. He went on to play Todd Manning on One Life to Live from 1993 to 2013. He won an Emmy for that role in 1994. Finally, he joined General Hospital in 2012 to take over as Dr. Austin Gatlin-Holt. He was shot and killed in 2023, ending his stint on GH.

Now, in shocking news, Howarth will be returning to CBS and joining Young and the Restless. He will reportedly begin taping in mid-September, with his first air date being later this year. Producers and writers are keeping his role a mystery, but say it will be a major story arc.

When he left General Hospital after more than a decade, Howarth said he would absolutely be open to returning to another soap in the future. His time has come, and fans can’t wait to see what Young and the Restless writers have planned for him.

After news broke of his return, Howarth went to Instagram to share a photo of himself with a Y and an R on it and said, “Excited and appreciative… I’m a lucky guy…”

How He Felt Leaving GH

When Roger Howarth died on General Hospital, he said it took a bit to sink in that his eleven-year run with the soap was ending. At the time, he said, “It took me a minute to kind of adjust, to kind of hear the news; it took a second for me to let that settle in. And then, immediately, I realized how lucky I was to have been able to do something I really love doing for more than a decade with people who I really enjoyed working with. I’m a lucky guy. I had a great run and this was a decision made by people who make these kinds of decisions for a living.”

Now, let the speculation begin. Who do you think Howarth will be playing on Young and the Restless? Are you excited to see him return to daytime television?
